#006. Why More Research Isn’t The Answer

Hi – it’s Rebecca.

One of the easiest ways to feel productive in business is to learn something. A new strategy. A new framework. A new course. A new podcast. A new AI conversation. A new ecommerce opportunity. By the end of the day, your Notion is full and your mind is buzzing with ideas.

It feels productive.

Sometimes it is.

Often it isn’t.

Because learning and progress can look remarkably similar from the inside – and that’s what makes this leak so difficult to spot.

The Research High

One of the things I love about business is that there is always something new to learn. There’s always another expert to follow, another book to read, another YouTube video to watch, another strategy to explore.

The problem is that learning feels good. You feel like you’re moving forward. You feel like you’re becoming more prepared. You feel like you’re reducing risk.

But in reality, something else may be happening.

You may simply be delaying a decision.

I’ve done this more times than I’d like to admit – researching products, suppliers, competitors, niches, software, funnels, what successful founders were doing, what unsuccessful founders were doing.

At some point, I realised something uncomfortable: the answer rarely appeared in the next piece of information. The answer usually appeared after I tested something.

The Hidden Assumption

You probably believe research creates certainty.

It doesn’t.

It creates understanding.

Those are not the same thing.

You can understand a market without validating your place in it. You can understand a product without knowing if people will buy it. You can understand a funnel without knowing if it will convert. You can understand a strategy without knowing if it will work for your business.

Because research tells you what might happen. Testing tells you what actually happens.

The difference is enormous.

The Safety Blanket

Looking back, I think research often served another purpose: it made me feel safe.

If I was still researching, I didn’t have to launch. If I was still learning, I didn’t have to decide. If I was still gathering information, I didn’t have to risk being wrong.

It’s a comforting place to be – and a dangerous place to stay.

Because the longer you remain in research mode, the easier it becomes to confuse preparation with progress.

The Research Solution

The bucket is leaking. I know. Let’s study water.

🤣

Or perhaps:

The bucket is leaking. I know. I’ve downloaded three more bucket courses.

The funny thing is that founders do this all the time. We buy another course. Watch another video. Listen to another podcast. Ask AI another question. Read another case study.

Meanwhile, the bucket continues to leak.

The leak doesn’t care how much you know. The leak only cares whether you fix it.

A Question Worth Considering

What decision are you currently postponing in the name of research? What test are you avoiding? What evidence are you hoping the next video, article, or conversation will provide?

Because the answer you’re looking for may not exist in another piece of information. It may exist on the other side of action.

This Week’s Leak

You may feel you need more information. Often you need more evidence.

Research reduces uncertainty. Testing creates clarity.

Those are not the same thing.

What do you think – where is this showing up for you right now?

Until next Saturday,

Rebecca
