#009. The Traffic Illusion – Why More Visitors Rarely Create More Sales

Hi – it’s Rebecca.

One of the most common requests in ecommerce sounds perfectly reasonable:

“I just need more traffic.”

I’ve said it myself. Maybe you’ve said it too.

If more people saw the offer, surely more people would buy. If more visitors arrived, sales would increase. If traffic doubled, revenue would follow.

The logic feels obvious.

But traffic isn’t always the bottleneck.

Sometimes the bottleneck is the offer. Sometimes it’s trust. Sometimes it’s positioning. Sometimes it’s the customer experience.

Eventually, I realised something uncomfortable:

You likely don’t have a traffic problem. You have a conversion problem.

The Traffic Illusion

Traffic feels productive because it’s visible.

Visitors. Clicks. Sessions. Impressions.

Numbers moving. Graphs climbing. People arriving.

It feels like progress.

The problem is that traffic is often blamed for problems it didn’t create.

Imagine a store converting at 0.5%. The founder decides they need more traffic. So they double their ad spend.

Twice as many visitors arrive. Twice as many people leave without buying.

The traffic wasn’t the problem. The offer was.

What Traffic Actually Does

Looking back, I’ve realised traffic is one of the most misunderstood concepts in business.

Traffic doesn’t create demand – it reveals demand. Traffic doesn’t create trust — it tests trust. Traffic doesn’t improve an offer – it exposes whether the offer is compelling enough in the first place.

That’s why more traffic can sometimes make founders feel worse.

The numbers go up. The sales don’t!

Now the weakness is impossible to ignore.

The Leaking Bucket

This is where The Leaking Bucket appears again.

The bucket is leaking. I know. Let’s pour more water in.

🤣

It sounds ridiculous – yet businesses do the equivalent every day!

Sales are disappointing → traffic becomes the answer. Conversion is weak → traffic becomes the answer. The customer journey isn’t working → traffic becomes the answer.

The assumption is that more visitors will somehow solve the problem. In reality, they often reveal it.

What Founders Miss

The best founders I know become obsessed with a different question.

Not:

“How do I get more traffic?”

But:

“Why aren’t existing visitors buying?”

That’s a completely different conversation.

Now you’re looking at:

  • the offer
  • the messaging
  • the positioning
  • the trust signals
  • the customer journey
  • the objections

Because if 1,000 visitors aren’t buying, sending another 1,000 usually isn’t the answer.

Understanding the first 1,000 usually is.

Founder Thinking

Founders understand that traffic is an amplifier – just like AI, just like scale, just like automation.

It magnifies what’s already there.

A strong offer with more traffic often performs better. A weak offer with more traffic simply gets rejected more often.

That’s why I now think differently about growth.

Before increasing traffic: improve conversion. Before increasing ad spend: improve the customer journey. Before chasing more visitors: understand the ones you already have.

Because the easiest sale is often hiding inside the traffic you’ve already earned.

A Question Worth Considering

If traffic doubled tomorrow, what would happen?

Would sales double? Or would twice as many people decide not to buy?

The answer tells you where the real leak might be.

This Week’s Leak

Many founders think they need more visitors. Often they need more reasons to buy.

Because more traffic doesn’t fix a weak offer. It simply introduces more people to it.

What do you think?
